Toronto Fire Services is urging residents to take a few simple precautions with their chargers and batteries as part of Fire Prevention Week 2026, which runs from Sunday, October 4 to Saturday, October 10.
This year's theme, "Safe Charging Is a Superpower," focuses on everyday charging habits that can prevent lithium-ion battery fires at home and in the community.
Lithium-ion batteries power many devices residents use daily, including smartphones, tablets, e-bikes, e-scooters and other portable electronics, according to a City of Toronto news release issued October 4. While the batteries are generally safe when used properly, damaged, defective or improperly charged batteries can pose a serious fire risk.
Simple steps to stay safe
Fire Chief Jim Jessop said safe charging begins with the right equipment and following manufacturer instructions.
Safe charging starts with using approved equipment and following the manufacturer's instructions. Always use approved chargers, cords and batteries, never tamper with or modify devices, and replace any battery or charging equipment that is damaged or defective. These simple steps can help prevent lithium-ion battery fires and keep our families and communities safer.
The advice from the City of Toronto news release includes using only approved chargers, cords and batteries; never tampering with or modifying devices; and replacing any battery or charging equipment that is damaged or defective.
